Ok so why do I keep seeing Coach Skrinjar from Southern in the paper. Is it not the kids who are playing? Skrinjar is a great motivational coach with tons of energy and has good defensive schemes but he is just another coach not a player anymore. In fact the whole Southern staff is pretty young. We do not see Mcdonalds coach in the paper week after week nor Western Reserves coach even though he is almost as energetic as Skrinjar. On this site before it is said people either like him or they don't but the community would like to see things about the kids not about Skrinjar. It is not his team it is the kids team and doesn't he have a coaching staff that is also involved in these wins or does Coach Skrinjar do it all himself. I for one watch the game not the sidelines and would love to see articles about the kids who are winning these games. This is not a bash on Skrinjar but more on the media for putting him above the TEAM that is stressed. Skrinjar should be aware that he is taking the light away from his kids and their exposure that may help them get into college to play

the spotlight is probably on him because they would not be where they are if it wasnt for him. But they should feature some of the players too because he need them to have a winning team

Ok so why do I keep seeing Coach Skrinjar from Southern in the paper. Is it not the kids who are playing? Having interviewed many, many coaches and players, it is understandable that the coaches are usually much, much more confortbale with interviews. Players are not. That has a lot to do with maturity and being confortable with a microphone in your face! The coach is the focal point of the team. He is the spokesman, the secretary and the contact person for a team, so of course the media talks to the coach first. However, it is important that the players be recognized for their acheivements. But it is usually the coach that talks about his players. I'm not sure which media outlet you are referring to as over-hyping Skrinjar, but with him being a new coach, and his team being 4-0, they are going to ride that story for quite awhile. In addition, the individual media outlets cover just the specific teams in their area, so sometimes those teams that are doing well, such as Southern, will be the main focus of the local high school sports page. And coach Skrinjar is the representative of that team. As long as Southern keeps winning you may have to get use to seeing Skrinjar in the news quite a bit.

If you are wondering why its because he is a class act and declines press oppertunities citing the work of his players. When he does take the time to talk to the press it is allways about the hard work of the young men and his equally hard working staff.

I only read what's online since I'm out of the territory, but up until this week I haven't read a lot of write-ups on Southern from the Morning Journal or Review online. That's why I'm thankful for this website to have a timely recap of the scores. Coaches also have to be careful about singling out one kid over another when there's only so much space in the newspaper. It is a crazy year when Southern and Sebring are a combined 7-1. In 1996 I attended a game where both were 0-9 and Sebring beat the tribe for their one win. For Trojan1, there was a nice write-up on Brophy in the Salem News today: www.salemnews.net/page/content.detail/id/534136/Surprise-Sebring.html?nav=5009

I don't understand why anyone would be complaining about how the news media is handling a great story concerning Southern Locals head coach Mike Skrinjar. Coach Skrinjar has showed the Southern kids that if you want to be good at something then you must put in the work to succeed. Coach Skrinjar deserves all the credit he gets. I'm sure that Coach Skrinjar would be the first one to tell anyone that the success the Indians are riding is a result of teamwork in his coaching staff and players. I live in the Southern community and I can tell you this, that almost everyone I have talked to is really excited about the job Mike Skrinjar is doing and we will not tire one bit of seing the news media give this young man his due

i agree with you about the coach. Coaching is key to a winning team and it starts at the head. I think he desrves the headlines especially with his first year as head coach .Sad to say there will always be someone jealous of a person getting the attention.
