Did he say anything about offensive and defensive coaches?
He said the only new coach he has seen so far is Coach Sarackmen.(sp?) I guess he coached previously at Boardman and St. Thomas.

Heard the Bulldogs looked pretty good against Western Reserve.

I think they played a little better than most people expected.
The offensive line was definitely a pleasant surprise and Corey Barnhouse is an absolute stud at RB.
The Defense was a little shaky though. WR hit some big passes and the tackling was terrible.
Another good sign was that I think EP may have had only 1 penalty while WR had about 6 or 7. Also, EP was in much better shape than WR. The EP kids seemed like they could run around all day while the WR kids were sucking wind after 20 plays.
I think this bulldog team has some potential, but still has a way to go if they want to challenge Crestview and Mineral Ridge for the ITCL Title.

Fundamental tackling and pass defense are needed.

While the O Line looked solid when run blocking, their pass protection was consistenly bad which is not good since there is a new, inexperienced QB under center. But as mentioned before, Barnhouse looked great and they should be able to move the chains as long as him and the O Line stay healthy. The defense showed flashes of being able to make some plays but still have a ways to go.
But considering EP lost a ton of kids from last years team and they have gone through a coaching change, I'd say they have made a good amount of progress. Hopefully they keep making strides and can compete once league play comes around.

The boys have to grow up fast. Been hearing some good things, but a lot of untested talent and inexperience. Coach Mattes has his hands full, but I bet he will outcoach a few ITCL coaches with ease. You have to think back to '00 when, yes Blevins, came from a D1 school to coach here. He had the same thing as what Mattes has. Look at what happened the following year and after. Shark had the same thing also, so let's sit back enjoy the games.

Good luck to the Bulldogs! They will need to get ready for a physical Southern team in just one week.

Don't underestimate Mattes and the team he brings. If you do, you will be in for a long night.

I went with a friend who's nephew plays at United to watch them scrimmage Southern Local down there last night. Southern Local looks like they have some big boys but they are slow and basically they are doing the same things they have done for the past few years in that double wing offense. Their offense is so jamed up that it is rather easy to stop their running game. I think this is a perfect game for East Palestine to start the season with to get some confidence. I haven't seen the Buldogs play yet but from what I have heard they shoud have no trouble handling Southern.

Southern is always big up front. That tight line is something from Coach Albert's era. Truthfully, the game will be close. Ep did lose to Brookfield, but only because we went for two. BCWR was in a scrimmage that they did not want to be in as Ep played them even, also. Other than that, look for a good game, as Ep-Southern has become a rivalry of sort from the old TCL days. Winner?, of course the Dogs, but look for Southern to make a little noise, too. Overall, this is one of the better conditioned Dog teams I have seen in awhile, and if they can go 3-0 in the non league, then look out.

make sure your helmets are strapped. Southern has some hitters. They remind me of the Southern team of a few years back. Barnhouses' speed may be the deciding factor if he can break on the outside. Turf should help EP. I look for a low scoring, close game similiar to last year. May come down to a turnover deep in the opponents end.

What makes you think East Palestine won't bring as hard or harder hits? From what this person has seen, Southern better strap up theirs!

My son told me that the coaches stressed in practice today that size and strength is what Southern wants the game to be about. He said the coaches really explained and broke down Southern schemes well and seem to have a great game plan.
Go Dawgs!

Dawgs79 I have to agree with you when you say that the coaches for East Palestine really explained and broke down Southern's schemes well. Southern has not done anything different in about 4 years and there is only about 4 plays you have to stop. My guess is that if East Palestines head coach has been around football for a long time he will not be surprised at what Southern does and won't have a problem adjusting to it. Southern has no passing game and if they even attempt to throw it usually can be picked off.

Southern fans are predicting a huge Indian win. I laughed so hard I almost pooped my shorts! Fact: Southern Head Coach-no experience Ep Head Coach-D1 coach of the year at Stow, 20+ yrs coaching. Do you really think Mattes is worried about Southern and that offense? PLEASE!
