Boardman (OH) Boardman HS standout Ryan Phillis became the 6th commitment in the 2010 Indiana recruiting class. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive end made his decision earlier today after attending a one day camp at IU back on June 17th and receiving an offer a few days after that. Peegs.com had a chance to talk to Phillis about his decision.
Phillis said that he just believed now was the right time to make his decision and Indiana had everything he was looking for.
"It felt like the right thing to do," he said. "It's a great atmosphere. I like the school. I like the stadium. I like the Big Ten conference. I liked just everything about it. It's nice and it's clean. It's just a great place to be around. And it's not too crowded."
The talented prospect said that when he called the coaches earlier today they were pretty excited to hear that he had picked Indiana.
"I talked to Coach Bobby Johnson and Coach Bill Lynch," Phillis said. "They seem excited about it. They said we're going to change the program around and win games and it's going to be a good year."
Phillis said the one day camp he attended at Indiana was a good one and he was impressed by how the coaches went about their business.
"It was good," he said about IU camp. "I worked as a defensive end. It was run smoothly. The coaches were nice and it felt like I was home there. It was good."
While he played middle linebacker last year as a junior, the Indiana staff sees him as a rush defensive end in college.
"I'm more of a quicker guy and I'm a defensive end they said," Phillis said about where IU has told him they see him playing with the Hoosiers. "They see me just beating the guys off the ball and being just more quick than anything."
Phillis, who is leaning towards a major in sports management, said he was hearing from Cincinnati, Michigan State, Central Michigan and a few other MAC schools.
While the athletic defensive end will be playing at Boardman H.S. in 2009, he spent his junior year at United Local H.S. Last season Phillis totaled 135 tackles as a middle linebacker and he was named all-conference, all-county, all-Quad County and all-Northeast Ohio.
