I was reading some posts about The Boardman Spartans in 09' and some people were saying they got a Linebacker who led United in tackles last year?

Ryan Phillis from United is moving to Boardman to play football for the Spartans next year. Yes, that was mentioned in the one other thread about next year. Sad news for the Eagles football team, but definetly good luck to Ryan!!!

I dont even know why he is leaving. He's not good enough, IMO to start, probably play special teams, at Boardman. But i guess he'll have to find out the hard way when people that are just as big as him but are 2 times faster and 2 times stronger then him. Why not stay at United and be a standout rather then go to Boardman where he'll be less then average??

I saw Uniteds Ryan Phillis play and he was something special, I do think he has a chance at starting but i don't think he'll stand out as much

That's rough for United. Kid would have had a wonderful year at United.

I came to just about every Eagle game this year, and the kid was incredible. He had over 100 tackles, has the SPEED and the SIZE. Instead of criticizing we should wish him the best. Good luck Ryan!! We will miss you, but we wish the best for you!!

I guess it would be better to be a less than average player at a division I school than to be a below less than average J.V. player at a division IV school. Maybe you should support a person that wants to better themselves instead of negatives. But i guess that is the UNITED way.

It could be because of his parents, or that half of the kids on the team have parents that are coaches, or that United has been quoted on other forums, such as jjhuddle , as the ITCL coaches graveyard.

I agree cuL8tr 99. Why cant people support a kid that wants to better himself and play for a great program under a GREAT coach?? That makes no sense to me. The kid was easily the best linebacker in the league last year. Hes got what it takes to be successful in D1 at the high school level. Who knows maybe ZachNoll will see him in a bowl game in a few years

Ryan has all the tools to succeed at the next level. This move would have been smarter last year, IMO because he would would have an extra year to adjust to the speed and size of D1 football, although I think he will do fine. This is a good move for recruiting purposes as well, because Jim Tressel doesn't show up in the weight room at United very often. He will be playing good talent week in and week out. Last year, for example, he face only 1 really good back and that would be Corey Hill. This year, he will have to face good backs week in and week out, and I'm sure he'll have his hands full when he faces Erik Howard from Hooover.
I hate to see this talent leave United, but its happened before. Sean Weyant, '02 left for Boardman to gain exposure, and it didn't pan out as well. I don't think this will be Ryan's case. He's been hitting the weights hard, and is developing into his body very well.
Maybe this loss will pull United together, or maybe it will tear them apart. I think that if they close the Ryan Phillis chapter of the book and find a new leader they will be fine. If they dwell in the past, things might go bad for them.
And to all the haters, please show this kid some support. I know he hates to be leaving the U and his friends, and I hate that my school is losing a h*ll of a player, but he is also looking to his future. Lets hope he makes the most of it, or he could be living life with some regrets. To Ryan, I can only wish you the best.

Well said gridirongiant!! If they dwell on it they are doomed. They need to move on and prepare for their season.
And uhsfootball05.....if you are who i think you are....that is very respectful and classy. good luck to you as well!!!
Good luck to Coach Ridgway and the Eagles!!

Getting a scholarship is no longer dependant on where you go to school. If he wants an offer, he needs to hit the camp circut this summer at the vatious schools in Ohio, OSU, Toledo, BGSU. That is more important than playing your senior season at Boardman. But I guess his family thinks oterwise.
